A Good Bye to Bob Cronin

Bob Cronin, our senior language advisor, left the Shanghai Daily yesterday.

As a veteran in journalism, he gave us, especially our young reporters of the online department, precious experience and selfless help, which are treasured by all of us.

He once told us he wished to tour around the world with his wife for the rest of his life. However, he stayed with the Shanghai Daily for three years, for us and our loyal readers.

Without Bob, freshmen of ShanghaiDaily.com wouldn’t have turned into experienced reporters so rapidly.

Each of us was told to “keep it (the story) simple and stupid.” Each of us knew “a short story is a good story” from him.

We want to say “Thank You” here to Bob and we hope he realizes his dream as soon as possible.

Recently members of ShanghaiDaily.com team have begun to take a weekly geographic quiz.

“We have detected some factual mistakes about geography during the editing process from time to time. And I found out it is because the team has some weakness in geographic knowledge,” said Guo Min, the head of the online department. “If we let these mistakes slipped through our hands, there will be errors in stories.

“Our readers are very intelligent and they can easily detect that. Otherwise, they will be misled by these mistakes,” he said. “That hurts the quality of our stories as well as ruins our reputation as a reliable English news source about China.”

“It will be better if the quiz can be put into English instead of Chinese, because we usually write news in English” said Gu Jia, one of our online writers. She thinks the quiz is a little bit difficult.

Being satisfied with her quiz scores, Winny Wang, another online writer, said: “Next time we can design quiz questions in turn and our quiz subjects can be verified.”

Li Xinran, our online writer, and Zhu Moqing, our online designer, feel that the quiz is too simple.

Li said both rewards and punishments should be given to the winners and the losers. For example, the loser can buy some snacks and share them with other online staff. Zhu suggests other subjects should to be tested, such as history and military affairs, which are his fields of interest.

Xiao Bai, another designer, heaves a sigh when being asked about the quiz because he wasn’t doing very well. But he still thinks such tests are necessary. He suggests next time we can have another quiz concerning computer knowledge, in which he’s a cut above the rest.
