AT least 14 prisoners died and 35 more were injured yesterday in a prison in Mexico's northeast Nuevo Leon state, a state spokesman said.

The fire, which broke out in the psychiatric area of Apodaca municipality's prison of Nuevo Leon state, was reportedly caused by a short-circuit at 3am local time (0830 GMT) yesterday.

The fire caused the roof of the psychiatric pavilion to collapse and kill the prisoners.

Rescuers said that they could find more victims once they remove the rubble.
